Online Education Has A Very Bright Future
Multiple industry reports released over the past few weeks predict the continued rise of e-learning and the adoption of new technology and learning models, from higher education to corporate training.
The 2014 Horizon Report from the New Media Consortium and the Educause Learning Initiative shows that a rapidly increasing number of universities are incorporating online learning environments into courses of all kinds; making the content more dynamic, flexible, and accessible to a larger number of students. According to the report, new blended learning models are engaging students in more peer-to-peer collaboration than tr
aditional courses by combining online learning activities with traditional classroom experiences. Learning analytics, also highlighted in the report and a particular area of focus at ArcheMedX, provide the “statistical and data mining tools to recognize challenges early, improve student outcomes, and personalize the learning experience.”
Similar technology adoption trends are driving increased spending on corporate training, which grew by 15% last year (the highest growth rate in seven years) to over $70 Billion in the US and over $130 Billion worldwide according to the 2014 Corporate Learning Factbook published by Deloitte. This increase is due in large part to the significant growth in new virtual learning environments that are revolutionizing the market: companies like GE, Motorola, Philips, and others are extending their training budget to reach 2-3 times the audience through the use of easy-to-use training portals, self-authored video, online communication channels, virtual learning environments, and MOOCs.
Not surprisingly, we have seen similar demand for more advanced e-learning solutions rising across medical education; particularly around personalization, real-time analytics, collaborative learning, and smaller sized content. And more importantly, growing evidence continues to demonstrate the positive impact e-learning and online education is having on improving medical competency and clinical performance.
